The first contest of the HSF/YMCA Kaua’i surfing series took place Saturday at Prince Kuhio in Poipu.
Masaijah Lani won the Junior Mens (15-17) age group, edging Shane Valiere (2nd) and Kalani Martin (3rd). Wyatt Taubman, Sean McCoy and Kyle Calloway followed in the age group (in that order).
Bethany Hamilton scorched the Girls 17-under division, topping Ashley Fagerstedt (2nd) and Andrea Abalos (3rd). Also placing in the division were Adrianna Mendivil (4th), Holly O’Flaherty (5th) and Britney Sussman (6th).
In Boys 12-under, Clay Posner came out on top, edging Tyler Newton (2nd) and Kalani Martin (3rd). Storm Kam was 4th, Kainoa Kuwabara was 5th and Aaron Hacker placed 6th.
Kalevi Yunwiyah won the Menehune (11-under) divison, topping Savanna Sussman (2nd) and Malia Manuel (3rd).
In the Men 4A (Open) division, Ruben Balmores came in first place, followed by Jeremy Doudt, Titus Kanehe and Hoku Hookana (in that order). And in the Masters division (25-34), Kalani Vierra topped Kanehe and David Miyasato for top honors.
Craig Balmores won the Senior Mens (34-44) division, beating Lesd Tabuchi and Russell Lewis. And in the Longboard competition, Tabuchi topped Vierra (2nd) and Ian Ham Young (3rd) for first place.
In bodyboarding: Kyle Mira won the Boys (14-under) bracket, topping Noah Murray, who placed second. Kiley Momohara took third and David Phillips rounded out the top four.
In the Junior division (15-17) Phillip Pembrook edged Cory Mira for the win. Adam Bice and Pyper Luellen finished second and third.
Maui Givens won the Senior (18-over) division. Cory Mira took second, Luellen third and Kyle Forker was fourth.
