Raider javee team blanks Kapa’a 13-0

LIHUE – Quarterback Max Hadwin ran for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Kaua’i Red Raiders to a 13-0 win over the Kapa’a Warriors Friday in a KIF jayvee matchup at Vidinha Stadium.

Hadwin, who struggled with a fumble and two interceptions in the first half, ran for TDs of 9 and 40 yards in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Kaua’i.

The Raiders now have one win, one tie and no losses in the young season. Kapa’a, which recorded just two first downs in the game, fell to 0-2.

Turnovers on both sides capped a sloppy first half at Vidinha. There were seven turnovers in the first half – four of them taking place within five minutes of the second quarter. With 5:54 remaining in the half, Hadwin was picked off by Warrior Jonathan Moeller, and then two plays later, Raider Falcon Valeria picked off a Warrior pass to regain control. Three minutes chipped off the clock before the next turnover – a Hadwin fumble picked up by Kapa’a CB Tyler Clark. And then, in back-to-back sequences, Raider Brian Rodriguez intercepted a Warrior pass and Hadwin was again picked off, this time by Isaiah Kanoho.

The Raiders attempted to jumpstart its offense in the third quarter behind the running of its nimble quarterback, but ultimately failed to convert. Hadwin broke through for runs of 14 and 31 yards in a drive that ended in a turnover of downs. And later, Hadwin’s 20-yard pass to Rodriguez was called back due to a costly penalty. The Raiders committed nine penalties in the contest.

Finally, in the fourth, Kaua’i found a way to tack numbers on the scoreboard.

Hadwin notched runs of 14 and 5 yards before he broke through for a nine-yard rushing touchdown with 7 minutes in the final period. And with just over 2 minutes remaining, Raider Angel Yadao picked off a Warrior pass, setting up a Hadwin’s 40-yard TD run to seal Kaua’i’s victory.
