Fifteen foot waves hit northwest facing shores Wednesday, bringing the first large winter swell of the year to Kaua’i’s North Shore.
Waves with 30-foot-plus faces are expected to break along the North Shore on Friday and Saturday, according to O’ahu surf forecaster Pat Caldwell’s University of Hawai’i Web site.
Hanalei Surf Company owner Charlie Cowden said the surf today was a little bigger than expected and generated by a storm fairly close to the Hawaiian Islands.
Caldwell has the upcoming swell coming from further out.
Surf is expected to dip a bit today before again rising on Friday.
Kaua’i missed out on a band of thunderstorms to the southwest of the Hawaiian Islands.
A flood watch was called Wednesday for all major Hawaiian Islands except Kaua’i.
