This long held coaching philosophy is the central theme for the hard work and optimism displayed at Red Raider varsity volleyball practices this week.
Encouraged Raider coaching staffs hope that a week of positive preparation, a fresh scouting report from the weekend Menehune-Warrior slugfests, and a loud home crowd will put their squads back on the winning track in KIF prep volleyball action this evening at the Kauai High School gym.
SHORT GAME NOTES: Match statistics of Saturday’s thrilling three set boys contest shows just how closely matched both squads are: each squad was credited with a pair of service aces apiece (Kapa’a: Kyle Mahoney and Cale Forsen 1 each; Waimea: Joshua Vinzant and Desmond Rodrigues 1 each); Menehune junior setter Erwin Wright recorded all 38 of his team’s assists while Kapa’a’s Mahoney recorded 34 of the 37 Warrior assists; Waimea edged Kapa’a in team kills 44-43 (Rodrick’s match-high 13 and Vinzant’s 12 led their respective teams); Kapa’a committed 11 hitting errors while the Menehunes were guilty of 16 errant kills; Menehune middle Casey Kaohelaulii and Rodrigues each recorded a solo block, while Wright, Rodrigues, and Jeremy McDown each assisted on 3 blocks to help the Waimea defensive total (2 solo blocks, 12 block assists); Bryan Domingo’s pair of block assists led the Warrior team total of 6 (with no solo blocks credited); Kapa’a outdug the Menehunes 34-29 (Rodrick’s 12 and Domingo’s 6 led Kapa’a, while Rodrigues’ 9 and Vinzant and Wright (each with 5 digs) paced the winning effort.
In the girls varsity match, the Menehunes recorded 8 service aces to the Warrior’s solo effort (Waimea: Britnee Boeder 3, Kapa’a: Ihilani Yama 1 led their teams); Yama assisted on 8 of Kapa’a’s 11 sets-for-kills while Menehune senior setter Ashlee Vea recorded 17 of her squad’s 18 assists); the Warriors were credited with 11 kills (Sharlene Carillo 4) and committed 13 hitting errors; Waimea amassed 19 kills (Boeder 8, Jannah Tafua and Virginia Aguilar 3 apiece) and made only 4 hitting mistakes; Warrior Kelly McBride and Menehunes Tafua and Aguilar each recorded a solo block while Waimea additionally chalked up 4 block assists; the Menehunes outdug Kapa’a 20-17 (Vea led all defenders with 7 digs, while McBride and Carillo worked hard for their 5 apiece).
Action commences this afternoon with the junior varsity girls contest at 3 p.m., to be followed by the junior varsity boys, varsity boys, and varsity girls contests.
