KAPA’A – In honor of two of its greatest memories, the Kapa’a Pop Warner League will host the 2002 Kaua’i Coconut Coast Memorial Bowl Saturday, Nov. 23 under the new lights of Kapa’a New Park.
The tournament – which features teams from Oahu, the Big Island, Puna, Kona and San Diego, Calif. – will be played in honor of the late Wilfred Kaui, one of the founders of Pop Warner on Kaua’i, and the late Tom Harper, former President of the Kapa’a Pop Warner Association.
Kaui and Harper helped kids grow and learn through football for over 30 years.
Kaui and the Kapa’a Association begin their history at the inception of Pop Warner football on Kaua’i. Kaui helped form the league, which was founded in the 1960s, and later became a driving force in the formation of the Northshore Pop Warner Association.
Harper was involved with the Kapa’a Pop Warner Association as both a coach and President. He also did double duties as a member of the official’s/referee’s chain gang for Pop Warner games. His wife, Lovey, was involved with the Kapa’a Cheeleaders for many years.
In honor of Kaui and Harper, a tree planting will take place at halftime of morning game. Presentation and awards will be handed out at the end of each game, and a luau for the visiting and hosting teams will be held at 8 p.m.
The tournament will also dedicate Kapa’a New Field’s lights, which were recently installed.
