Four Menehune make All Star First Team in 2002

The Garden Island Newspaper is proud to announce its selections for the 2002 Kauai Interscholastic Federation prep girls varsity volleyball all-star team.

– First Team –

The 10-member first team includes four key members of the league-champion Menehune and is led by Co-Most Valuable Player selections Britnee Boeder and Virginia Aguilar, both in their fourth year of varsity competition.

Boeder, Waimea’s 5-6 number-one offensive option on the left side, led the entire KIF (both girls AND boys) in kills (66) and service aces (16). The senior outside hitter and Menehune co-captain additionally aided on 4 block assists (5th) and scrambled for 59 digs (5th).

Aguilar, a 5-9 quick striking middle hitter for the Menehune, paced the champions success with her positive, determined example on the floor. This multi-sport senior (bowling, air riflery) overpowered single blocks with 46 kills (2nd) while committing only 8 hitting errors, and often initiated key runs with 9 service aces (6th). She was also a force defensively with a league-leading 6 solo blocks and assisted on 4 (5th). Aguilar also excelled in the back row with 23 dig saves.

Other members include:

Amniesty Ragsac (Kapa’a) – Ragsac was simply a great find this season for the Warriors – though only a freshman, she displayed a great range of skills at the net and in the back row. The 5-5 outside hitter was fourth in the league with 43 kills, served 6 aces, assisted on 1 block, and ranged for 70 digs (2nd).

Jannah Tafua (Waimea) – The strength of the victorious Menehune squad this season was the play of their outstanding middle hitters and blockers. Tafua, a 5-9 senior middle hitter, picked up where Aguilar left off with 29 kills (10th), 5 solo blocks (tied for 2nd) and a KIF leading 7 block assists.

Kyrie Simeona (Kauai) – Simeona, a free-wheeling left-handed swinger was an integral part of the high-octane Raider game plan. The 5-6 junior opposite hitter pounded out 45 kills (3rd) and floated 10 service aces (5th). She also was credited with 2 assists, 1 solo block, 3 block assists, and 34 digs.

Tina Moger (Kauai) – Another of the great freshman class of hitters that excelled at the varsity level this year. The 5-6 opposite hitter proved her worth with 34 kills (8th), 12 service aces (2nd), 2 solo blocks (tied for 5th), 3 block assists (tied for 7th), and a team-high 69 digs (3rd in the league).

Courtney Doliente (Kauai) – This savvy, take-charge 5-5 setter led the KIF with 188 assists while also collecting 6 aces, 12 kills, 2 block assists, and 38 digs. One of only three Raider seniors, tri-captain Doliente’s floor generalship was instrumental in a great second round run.

Ashlee Vea (Waimea) – In her third year as the focal point of the Menehune offense, Vea doled out a league second-best 154 assists and 11 service aces (3rd). The 5-6 senior co-captain hustled to lead all setters with 20 kills, assisted defensively on a pair of blocks, and dug up a KIF-leading 71 saves.

Kellie Masuda (Kauai) – This 5-7 senior defensive specialist was quietly another Raider force in both the front and back rows. Raider tri-captain Masuda racked up 24 kills, 1 assist, 5 service aces, 3 block assists (7th), and picked up 64 digs (4th) to help her squad battle for the KIF second round title.

Ihilani Yama (Kapa’a) – Primarily utilized as the Warriors starting setter, this jump-serving dynamo also played great defense from the back right position with 55 digs (6th). The 5-1 senior defensive specialist assisted on 120 successful kills while swinging for 5 of her own. The Warrior co-captain also served 2 aces and assisted on a pair of blocks.

Coach of the Year Dr. Paul Arrington (Waimea) – Guided his charges to an 8-1 record overall and the 7th school title in his nine years at the helm of the Menehune (28th overall in 32 years of KIF volleyball). Ably assisted by Walter Souza and Ainsley Hori, Coach Arrington never failed to exude a positive and calming influence during the rigors of a championship season.
