In the end, there was little the Kapa’a Warriors could to do ruin the Waimea Menehune’s perfect regular season.
Forward Jordon Dizon scored all of his 13 points in the first half in the Menehune’s 58-19 rout of the Warriors Friday night at Bernice Hundley Gymnasium.
The Menehune (2-0) trailed only once in the game, after an Amini Ta’ufo’ou jumper gave the Warriors a 2-0 advantage. But Waimea pulled ahead and led comfortably the rest of the way.
The Warriors (0-1), who turned the ball over 9 times in the first quarter, couldn’t penetrate the Menehune defense down low. Waimea led 13-7 after the first period and, following a 6-point Dizon burst in the second, led 34-13 at the half.
The Menehune shut out the Warriors for the last 7 minutes of the third quarter, and allowed just 3 field goals in the second half. The Warriors were outscored 22-12 in the final two periods.
Lanikai Kanehele and Alan Manuel each had 8 points for Waimea. Kanehele also added 7 rebounds.
Casey Kaohilaulii and Blaine Camden each had 7 points and 4 rebounds for the Menehune. Mark Andres had 6 points, Josh Vinzant had 4 and Jay Parinas 2.
Similar to his performance in the Menehune’s 46-45 season opening win over the Kaua’i Red Raiders, Desmond Rodrigues made contributions without scoring big numbers. He had finished with 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.
The Warriors were led by Ta’ufo’ou with 6 points. Ryan Cram and Randy Vicoy each added 4 points, Jonny Poe Hooikaika 3 and Ricky Rodrick 2.
The Warriors will look to bounce back against the Kaua’i Red Raiders Tuesday at the Raiderdome in Lihue. Jayvee tips off at 5:30 p.m. and varsity begins 20 minutes after the jayvee game.
