The Menehune earned three wins in girls doubles to hand the Red Raiders a 3-2 loss in KIF tennis on Saturday at the Kaua’i Lagoons.
After Kaua’i’s Jennifer Kawaguchi (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) and Asami Takaya (6-1, 6-1) earned wins over Waimea’s Sonya Tacub and Mitzi Seto, the Menehune took the match in doubles.
Reiko Ayaba and Jenny Morita (6-1, 6-2) of Waimea earned the first win in No. 1 doubles over Kaua’i’s Lezlie Tao and Shannon Bullock.
Sara Nonaka and Taira Kajwana of the Menehune earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Red Raiders’ Nikki Matsumura and Alyssa Stanwood.
In No. 3 doubles Waimea’s Amanda Gatioan and Jenny Rumbado beat Kaua’i’s Shella Farutani and Alyssa Miyake 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
In boys action, the Red Raiders beat Waimea 5-0.
Kaua’i’s Jordan Kukino won at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-0 over Waimea’s Peterson Dela Cruz.
The Red Raiders’ Chris Colacino beat the Menehune’s Talon Abat 7-6, 6-0 in No. 2 singles.
In the most competitive doubles match of the day, Kaua’i’s Bryce Hosaka and Michael Hirahara (No. 2 doubles) bested Waimea’s Desmond Rodrigues and Kollin Morikawa 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
In other doubles action, Ronald Hosaka and Grant Teichman of the Red Raiders bested Waimea’s Joseph Mecham and Norman Vea 6-0, 6-4 in No. 1 doubles.
In No. 3 doubles, Eric Fujikawa and Stephan McClaran or Kaua’i defeated the Menehune’s Bryan Hayashi and David Honma 6-3, 6-0.
The Red Raiders face Kula while Waimea plays Kapa’a next Saturday.
