HANAPEPE — The West Kauai all-stars will be representing Kauai at the state tournament coming up in July on Oahu after both their Bronco and Mustang teams swept the playoff series against the Lihue all-stars played Saturday at Kato Field in Hanapape.
West Kauai opened up the morning by turning to a stable of four pitchers to edge past Lihue 7-6 in the Bronco playoffs before the Mustangs capitalized on Lihue errors, and combining with the pitching of Dalton Christy, locked up an 11-3 win behind seven hits.
Christy, picking up the win for the WK Mustangs, struck out one, allowed no walks, and got a lot of support from the WK defense, notably, firstbase Vinda Carineo who was responsible for four pitcher-firstbase outs.
Christy notched an RBI behind the plate, finishing 1-for-3, and scored a run.
Carineo led the Mustang bats with a 2-for-3 outing, stealing three bases, scoring twice, and picking up a pair of RBI in the win.
Taylan Acoba, 0-for-3, scored once, getting aboard on a walk, but helped out with a pair of RBI.
Kalama Resquer-Yorkman and Brenden Scoval, 2/3 including a fourth inning double, each scored a pair of runs in the win.
Lihue scored their three runs on four hits with Taran Tani, Hank Ibia, and Keahi Benzon crossing the plate in the first inning before being shut down by WK, Sean Mamaclay and Jaexanne Balilea coming up with hits in the outing.
An RBI single by Lihue Broncos’ Lannon Rice in the fifth inning scored Jordan Leanio to deadlock the contest 6-6 in the Bronco playoff, but the effort fell short as Jessica Iwata, earlier coming up with a RBI single scoring Kaylen Wakumoto, was one of two runners left stranded in the 3-run, 4-hit frame.
WK answered in the bottom of the frame by pushing Kaulana Silva home on an RBI bunt single by Joey Allianic-Brun as WK took the 7-6 contest, utilizing four pitchers to keep Lihue at bay.
Cole Parongao started for WK, with Tent Allianic, Braden Balocan, and Reggie Vigilia coming in to close the contest on the hill.
Lihue starter Leanio was relieved by Rayson Sakamoto who finished in the loss.
WK scores came from Jordan Garcia, scoring twice in the win, and scores from Parongao, Kailan Malama, Silva, Covin Resquer-Yorkman, and Allianic-Brun.
Kawika Sweet, opening the scorebooks on a wild pitch score, Chris Liu-Saguid, Kalani Brackenridge, Wakumoto, Sakamoto, and Leano inked the Lihue scorebooks in the loss.
