UCLA Bruins take UH Big Wave
The UCLA men’s and women’s teams each captured first place at the University of Hawai‘i Big Wave Cross Country Invitational that was held at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Among the six men’s teams participating, UCLA ran away with the title as Austin Ramos (15:13) and Micky Cobrin (15:21) finished first and second for the Bruins. UCLA posted five of the top seven times overall.
Houston, the only other mainland team on the men’s side, finished second overall with 50 points followed by four local colleges – Hawai‘i Pacific (76), BYU-Hawai‘i (98), Hawai‘i-Hilo (140), and Chaminade (167).
The Bruins held off defending NCAA National Champions Brigham Young in the women’s 4K race, placing five of the eight spots. BYU’s Michaela Mannova won the individual title with a time of 13:28.
A total of 11 teams took part in the race along with a handful of unattached runners.
Host Hawai‘i, coming off a first-place finish last week at the University of San Francisco Invitations, ended sixth overall among the women, and was the highest in local college placement.
Freshmen Chantelle Laan (14:58) and Dana Buchanan (15:03) led the UH Rainbow Wahine, both runners finishing 24th and 25th respectively.
Seasiders lose to water polo Masters
Laie, HI — Vanja Kalabic’s five goals for the BYU – Hawai’i men’s water polo team weren’t enough to help the Seasiders win against the Hawaiian Masters Saturday in Laie as they fell after a double overtime and sudden death. Craig Watson led the Masters with six goals as they beat BYU – Hawai‘i 13 – 12.
Other scorers for the Seasiders included Kevin Van Haaster who had two goals with Jamie Jacobson, Jordan Brink, Alan Shumway, Mike Rieben and Keith Dow, all putting away a goal. Other leading scorers for the Masters were Christian Jensen and Doug Cole, who each put two in the cage, Cole with the winning point.
BYU – Hawai’i travels to California this week, beginning their five-day road trip Tuesday as they face the University of California – Santa Cruz.
