The man who suffered a skull fracture in a dirtbike wreck Sunday evening was in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, and has been transported to The Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
Kevin Christian, 37, of Kapa‘a, was in critical condition at Queen’s as of yesterday. A passerby called for help when she saw a man lying on the road at about 6 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Police said Christian’s Kawasaki 250 dirtbike sustained scrapes, and that initial investigation showed that Christian probably skidded or slipped and injured his head when he fell off the bike.
Kaua‘i Police Department Traffic Safety Sgt. Mark Scrib-ner said Christian’s dirtbike was impounded so police can inspect the vehicle for any possible mechanical failure.
A dirtbike cannot be registered or insured, and does not have license plates. It is unlawful to ride an uncertified vehicle such as a dirtbike on a county roadway.
It was discovered that Christian was not wearing a helmet. Hawai‘i has no law stating that adults have to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle or dirtbike. Police said that upon their arrival at the scene, it was not raining, and that the victim was tested for the possibility that he was operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
In a separate vehicle accident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Kilauea, one patient was treated and released from the emergency room at Wilcox. A second remains at Wilcox. Names of the victims of the Kilauea incident were not immediately available.
