Members of the County Council were recognized at the annual meeting of the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawai‘i, held at the Queen’s Medical Center Conference Room on October 2. According to Coalition Director Ms. Deborah Zysman, Councilmembers’ participation in the process to help create smoke-free restaurants has taken Kaua‘i County and the State of Hawai‘i one-step closer to becoming “the Health State.”
Kaua‘i County Ordinance No. 795 was introduced on July 25, 2002 and took effect on January 1, 2003.
This law prohibits smoking in restaurants and bars within restaurants, in addition to numerous pubic places and workplaces with more than five employees per work shift. Smoking is permitted in open-air areas of restaurants, stand-alone bars, nightclubs, and part-time restaurants/bars (restaurants that operate during certain hours can allow smoking only during bar hours).
Present at the recognition ceremony was state Senator Gary Hooser, who was a Councilmember when the no-smoking ordinance was introduced and passed.
Others from Kaua‘i recognized at the annual meeting included the Tobacco-Free Kaua‘i Coalition who worked towards passing, promoting, and implementing the new law.
