The KIF bowling champions of Kaua‘i High School head to Hilo for competition in the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships, Nov. 13 – 14.
Kaua‘i High, who won the KIF last year ended up 5th overall girls and 10th overall for boys at the 2002 HHSAA tournament, this year has a far younger team than years past. Coach Wil Tabian called defending champion Pearl City, Kailua and Kamehameha Schools its main competitors, each have three or four seniors.
“Last year, quite a few of the kids were seniors; this year we’re hoping some will bring home individual awards,” Tabian said Wednesday at Lihu‘e Bowling Center, during one of the team’s last practices before Hilo.
With four seniors total on Kaua‘i High’s competition team, one bowling as an alternate, youth is their secret weapon. Freshman Noelle Campos, who leads the girls with an overall average in the 180s, and bowled a 158 three-game average in their last tournament held Nov. 1 at Lihu‘e Bowling Center. 10th grader Mei Ling Keopuhiwa, last season’s high bowler, leads the Raiders as co-captain with senior Alyssa Garren.
On the boys side, freshman Jessie Duarte at the same competition, bowled a team high average of 199.
On the boys’ team, the bowler with the highest average is Garren Venzon. Boys team captains are senior Jon Peter Sit and Cedric Macadangdang.
Team members traveling to Hilo are Jon Peter Sit, Garren Venzon, Travis Fontanilla, Cedric Macadangdang, Jessie Duarte, Blaine Kane, Alyssa Garren, Jasmine Cadiz, Loreen Rita, Jennifer Espiritu, Mei Ling Keopuhiwa, and Noelle Campos. The Red Raiders take to Hilo Nov. 13 and 14, with competition at Hilo Lanes.
