Annual Visitor Charity Walk
Dust off your water bottles, bring out your slippers and get ready for a good time at the 26th Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on Saturday, May 15!
Sponsored by the Hawai’i Hotel & Lodging Association (HHLA), the Charity Walk is Hawaii’s largest single-day fundraiser, taking place simultaneously on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
“We are ‘Walking for Our Future’ this year,” said Ernest Nishizaki, Charity Walk chairperson and vice president and chief operating officer of Kyo-ya Company, Ltd. “At least $100,000 of funds raised from this year’s Charity Walk will be dedicated to benefit Hawaii’s public education.”
“The visitor industry is a huge supporter of our schools here in the islands. Not only do we donate hotel and restaurant certificates to school events, but we also provide grants and scholarships, and foster partnerships with the schools through community activities and internship opportunities,” Nishizaki added.
“While the majority of our Charity Walk funds will continue to be allocated toward social and civic community needs, we wanted to make a significant contribution toward the future of our state, and that is the education of our students, our kids,” said Murray Towill, president of HHLA.
Kauai’s three-mile Walk begins at 7 a.m. at the Historic County Building. Neighbor Island Charity Walks also feature visitor industry sponsored checkpoints offering food, beverages and local entertainment.
Last year, more than 10,900 walkers on four islands participated to raise $810,000 for more than 180 local charities. Since its inception in 1978, the Charity Walk has raised over $14 million for Hawaii’s charities. For more information and walker applications, visit www.charitywalk.org or call Deborah Baker at the Hawai’i Hotel Association on Kaua‘i 826-2273.
