Rodeo fans, hold on to your hats and tighten up those buckles, because it’s time for the Fifth Annual CJM Country Stables Koloa Plantation Days Rodeo on Sunday, August 1.
The Kaua‘i All Girls Rodeo Association Drill Team will perform the grand entry opening ceremony at noon. This year there will be a $1.00 per person donation at the gate to benefit Kaua‘i’s YMCA (children under 5 free). Sunday’s rodeo promises to be a fun-filled day for the entire family, with unique craft vendors and a variety of food booths, including everyone’s favorite, shaved ice.
There’ll be a bounce house and rodeo clowns with games for the children. Rodeo coordinators Joyce and Jimmy Miranda have added entertaining new events this year, including a junior barrel racing competition for riders, 9 to 12 years of age. Also for the first time, there’ll be mixed double mugging. Mugging is a unique Hawaiian event with two partners, one on horseback and one on the ground in the arena. The roper lassos the stock, jumps off his horse, then the mugger runs in, so the two can wrestle the steer down and tie the three legs.
In addition to traditional mugging, the Plantation Days Mixed Double Mugging competition will consist of one cowboy and a cowgirl, working together to bring down a nearly 400 pound steer. Another special Hawaiian rodeo event will be the po‘o wai u, based on the old Paniolo tradition of roping wild cattle and tying them to a tree during the oldtime round-ups. There’ll be daily team roping, wahine barrel racing, and the heart-pounding bull riding finale.
Entry applications will be accepted up to July 20. Rodeo competitors who have not yet received their entry forms can pick them up at Del’s Feed in Puhi or call Joyce Miranda at 652-9324. There’ll be preliminary eliminations for Friday and Saturday, July 30-31 starting at 1:00 p.m. at the CJM arena, with the top 15 competing on Sunday. Trophy, buckles, and prizes will be awarded right after the rodeo.
The Kaua‘i Rodeo Club, along with CJM’s Joyce and Jimmy Miranda, thank the County of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Anheuser-Busch and Midpac Auto for all their assistance.
