Tavana earns all-america honors
Kaua‘i High School’s Futi Tavana garnered all-america honors at the 2004 U.S.A. Junior Olympics boys volleyball championships in Austin, Texas.
In the meantime, the Asics Rainbow Volleyball Club, the team Tavana plays for, along with fellow Kaua‘i boys, Kevin Downing and Justin McSheehy finished in fifth-place out of 30 teams. In the final round, the Asics squad beat Yorktown of Windsor, Pennsylvania (22-25, 25-19, 15-10), but fell in their last two games, against Sacramento Volleyball Club (25-19, 22-25, 13-15) and Pili Pa‘a from the Big Island (23-25, 21-25). Pili Pa‘a took home the boys 17-and-under championship.
Sign up for Waimea soccer
Registration for players between the ages of 5-19, who would like to play soccer in Waimea will be held at the Waimea Park Pavilion on Tuesday, July 13, Thursday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 20. Sign-up times are from 4-6 p.m. First time players will need to bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of medical insurance. The early registration fee is $60 and will be $75 after August 1. All youths are urged to sign-up early for an exciting soccer season. UH Wahine volleyball picked first
Defending WAC volleyball champion Hawai‘i has been selected in a poll by the league’s coaches to defend its crown in 2004 and take home its ninth-straight regular-season title. UH is coming off a 36-2 season in 2003 that saw the Rainbow Wahine earn their eighth-consecutive WAC regular-season title with a 13-0 record. Fresno State was picked to finish second and Rice, Nevada, and SMU rounded out the top five.
Oride finishes second in state junior golf
Lihu‘e’s Kelli Oride claimed second place with a 158 total, just eight strokes back of Honolulu’s Cyd Okino in the girls 10-and-under division of the 2004 Callaway Junior State Open at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Club last Wednesday.
Other Kaua‘i notables included, Rae-Lyn Morikawa, who finished in ninth place in the girls 11/12 division and Travis Toguchi, who finished in eighth place in the boys 13/14 division.
Nawiliwili Yacht Club channel race party
Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Kaua‘i Channel Race 2004 Party will take place Saturday, July 17 at the NYC’s new clubhouse in the Nawiliwli Small Boat Harbor. Tickets can be pre-purchased for $35 from: Coldwell Banker Bali Hai Realty in Hanalei; North Shore Pharmacy in Kilauea; Keiki Kottage, Jim Saylor Jewelers & Vision Properties in Kapa‘a; Holo Holo Charters in Port Allen; and at Outfitters Kaua‘i in Po‘ipu. If not sold out, tickets will be available at the door for $45. Party Only tickets are available at the same locations for $10 ($15 at the door).
