UH’s Chang on Walter Camp list
University of Hawai‘i quarterback Timmy Chang is one of 40 “players to watch” for the National Player of the Year Award, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced yesterday.
Chang, a Heisman Trophy candidate, enters the 2004 season second all-time on the NCAA Division I career passing list, just 2,218 yards shy from breaking Ty Detmer’s (BYU) record of 15,031. The senior currently owns or shares 36 Warrior records and eight WAC marks. The St. Louis School product was also selected on the Davey O’Brien National Award watch list and tabbed as the WAC’s Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Chang and the Warriors open the season at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 4, against Florida Atlantic at 6:05 p.m.
BYUH men lose opener
The Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i men’s basketball team lost the opening game of its trip to China Tuesday night, 80-71, to Ji Ling Tigers, one of China’s top provincial teams. The Seasiders will play two more games on the goodwill tour.
Jake Chrisman scored 20 points in less than a half of play to lead the way for the Seasiders.
BYUH will travel to extreme Northwest China for games today and Saturday before returning home on Monday.
Olympic sculptures to honor Kahanamoku
HONOLULU — Swatch, the official timekeeper of the 2004 Olympics, will unveil two Olympic-sized sand sculptures this Saturday in tribute to the legendary Duke Kahanamoku and the Athens Summer Games.
These incredibly detailed sculptures, made entirely from sand and water, of a life-size Duke Kahanamoku and 20-foot-long Olympic Swatch watch will be displayed at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Admission is free and open to the public.
Also, Matt Biondi, one of America’s greatest all-time swimmers and, with Mark Spitz, the most decorated Olympian ever with 11 medals, will make a special appearance this Saturday, starting at 2:00 p.m., at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. There is no fee to meet Biondi and his appearance is open to the public.
