Hanapepe breaks the ice

The Hanapepe Ice Breakers edged Koloa, 1-0 in AYSO boys 8U action on Saturday. Justin Silva scored the lone goal. Outstanding players included Kaina Christian, Drake Kaohelauli‘i, Theron Shigematsu, Brock Tacata, and Bobby Oliver. Outstanding players for Koloa were Gregory Gonzales, Coleman Jonas, Logan Baptiste, Sean Reichle, Cal Anacleto, Brock DeCosta, Kevin Ikeda, and Blaze Rendon. Kawika Smith coaches Hanapepe and Chad and Adam Gonzales, and Destin Foley coaches Koloa. The Hanalei Ratpack fell to the Wailua Cobra’s, 6-4. Lowen Gonzales, Hunter Bilbo (4), Bryson Phillips, and Hayden Hisler (3) all scored goals. Coaches included Riberio and Gonzales. Chazton Sasil, Lars Baldwin, Kaylen Blaine, Michael Raithaus, Kaina Burnz, Christopher Suniga, Kyle Travis, Kea Nacolatabua, Justin Uegawa, and Michael Carvalho were all outstanding.
Kaua‘i Fall Jr. Open results
James Odan made it to the semi-finals of the boys 18 singles event, but fell to Bryce Silva, 6-1, 7-6 at the Kaua‘i Fall Jr. Open. Justin Vea got to the final in the boys 16 singles, but Colin Fujishige won the final, 6-0, 6-4.
Mikaiah Vea (boys 12 singles) and Isaiah Eliyah (boys 10 singles) got to the semi-final round and Alex Sirois (girls 18 singles) and Kelli Okamoto (girls 16 singles) made it to the quarters. Lyndsey Tom (girls 14 singles) and Jordan Kukino (mixed 18 doubles) got to the finals. Tom also made it to the mixed 14 doubles finals. The Eliyah/Khalyavina (mixed 14 doubles) combo and the Dunham/Kukino (mixed 12 doubles) pair made it to the quarters.
YMCA Kaua‘i Challenge receives funding
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority announced its selection of organizations that will receive funding for sporting events occuring between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15, 2005. The events were solicited through a request for proposal process and evaluated by a sports committee comprised of members of HTA staff, board and community. According to HTA’s President Rex Johnson, “The objective of our Sporting Events program are to support events that provide national and international television coverage, attract visitors to Hawai‘i as participants and spectators.
Gorospe dominates monster truck division
It was a great Sunday for Bongie Gorospe, who piloted his 1/8 4wd nitro monster truck to victory. Dennis Ginez was also the big winner on both 1/10 2wd nitro truck and 1/8 4wd nitro buggy divisions. Following Ginez in the 2wd nitro truck contest were Dennis Morales, John Echalar, Seth Morales, Julius Cesar, and Bengy Antonio.
Following Ginez in the 1/8 4wd nitro buggy division were Wendell Esposo, Arnold Morales, Dimi Rivera, Noel Udaundo, and Aaron Arizo. In the 1/8 4wd nitro monster truck competition, Mackie Silva, Noel Udaundo, Dimi Rivera, Randy Alcantara, and Bart Ovales finished 2-6. The next race is on Oct. 24 at Big Kmart’s back parking lot. Midnight ‘Ohana set for Friday
The 2004-05 UH men’s and women’s basketball teams kick-off fall practice with the annual Midnight Ohana, Friday, Oct. 15. The men’s intrasquad scrimmage will feature Honolulu mayoral candidates Duke Bainum and Mufi Hanneman.
Pop Warner cheer competition
The 11th Annual Regional/National Qualifying Cheerleading Championships happens on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Waimea’s gym.
