In one of the closest finishes in state cross country history, Hawai‘i Prep senior Emmett Weatherford (17:21.65) blinked past defending champ Jerry Kamaka‘ala (17:21.90) in the last 10 meters of the boys race yesterday on the Big Island.
Weatherford also broke his own course record of 17:34, which he set in last Friday’s BIIF championship.
The Kamehameha-O‘ahu boys took first-place with 73 points, followed by Punahou with 107, and ‘Iolani with 119 came in third. Hawai‘i Prep (133) and Honoka‘a (180) rounded out the top five.
Island School (Chris Marsh, Alan Hoffman, Brian O’Brien, Andrew Jones, Fabio Villa) finished in 15th-place with a total of 355.
Waimea’s Scott Martin was the top Kaua‘i finisher at 8th-place.
The Menehune junior was clocked at 18:16.10.
Kaua‘i’s Chad Naganuma crossed the finish line in 37th-place with a time of 19:23.30 and Island School’s Chris Marsh finished in 44th-place at 19:35.50.
Hawai‘i Baptist’s Lauren Ho got the first-place nod for the girls race with a 12:34.95, as she broke the course record of 12:48 she set herself on October 9.
‘Iolani’s Nicole Anderson came in second with a time of 13:04.75, followed by Lucy Pollard (13:29.60) of Hawai‘i Prep.
Kaua‘i’s Chelsea Smith-Wishard nailed down the 12th spot with a 13:59.90. Waimea’s Rachel Martin came in 20th-place with a time of 14:21.90.
Kula’s Gillian Pickett was right behind in 24th-place at 14:30.85.
The Kamehameha-O‘ahu girls took first-place with 72 points, followed by ‘Iolani with 100 points, and Baldwin in third at 126.
Kaua‘i (Smith-Wishard, Kassy Morishige, Amanda Savage, Sherylle Cadiente, Caitlin Towner) finished in 12th-place with 294 points and Kapa‘a (Alex Pond, Liana Nakazawa, Erin Pickett, Kiren Pond, Briana Conant) got the 14th spot with 344 points.
