Future of Kokee
Once again Juan Wilson finds a conspiracy behind every tree (Viewpoint 11/22 “Future of Kokee”). His reckless and wild accusations inform the readers of a PMRF plot using DLNR to keep the public away from Koke‘e military installations. As usual, Wilson offers no proof to back up his ridiculous statements. He continues his tall tale trying to convince the reader that the military presence on Kauai is unwanted and poses a danger to us. Nothing could be further from the truth and he knows it. Mr. Wilson should get his facts straight and talk to his neighbors on the West side to see just how endangered PMRF and the Air Guard Units make them feel. Are they endangered because of the jobs PMRF provides? Is it the annual summer jobs and training opportunities for students? Perhaps it’s the hundreds of computers donated to the Kauai schools? Maybe it’s the Iniki recovery aid rendered to the community that caused this fear. The obvious truth, to those who take the time to look, is that Kaua‘i is far better off with PMRF and the military than without.

Conservative opinion
I always read the conservative opinion pieces placed prominently on your editorial page, and am usually impressed by how cleverly the writers (Kondracke, Perkins, etc) manage to contort the facts and leave false impressions. Even though these are opinion pieces, I am reminded of the saying, “You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.” The Joseph Perkins piece entitled “Give Bush his way on judicial nominee” is a perfect example. Perkins says Republicans should use the “nuclear option” of rewriting Senate rules to eliminate any possibility that Democrats could block a judicial nomination. And why? Because Senate Democrats succeeded in blocking the confirmation of 10 of the president’s nominees. What Perkins conveniently leaves out is the fact that those same Democrats approved 200 other nominees! In other words, they approved 954574270f Bush’s judges! These Republicans, and the op-ed writers who support them, will never be satisfied until they get 1005043200f everything!
