It was big blue bringing back the hardware for the Garden Island, as Sharla Shimono and Brian Martin finished in the top 15 en route to receiving medals at the HHSAA/Civilian Marksmanship Program 2004 Boys State Air Riflery Championships on Tuesday at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
Shimono finished with scores of 183 (prone), 162 (standing), 170 (kneeling), for a total of 515.
Punahou’s Heather Horn finished in first-place with a 535 total. Waimea’s Sheila Ramos just missed out on medaling, finishing in 16th place, just two points behind Pearl City’s Jolana Gollero. Ramos scores included, 179 (prone), 154 (standing), 170 (kneeling), for a total of 503.
In the girls team competition, Waimea finished in seventh-place with a team total of 1933. Sacred Hearts took the top spot with a 2108.
Other Waimea standouts included Mitzi Seto 169 (prone), 122 (standing), 151 (kneeling) for a total of 442 and Ashley Shimono 175 (prone), 149 (standing), 149 (kneeling) for a total of 473.
For the boys, Martin’s scores included 171 (prone), 166 (standing), 166 (kneeling) for a 503 total.
The top boys finisher was Waiakea’s Steven Nozaki with a total of 538.
Kaua‘i’s Brandan Nakamoto tied for 16th place and just missed out on a medal with a total of 502: 187 (prone), 155 (standing), 160 (kneeling).
Waimea’s Kori Sakahashi scored a respectable 496: 182 (prone), 148 (standing), 166 (kneeling).
The Kaua‘i boys took eighth-place with a 1871 total. Waiakea took the boys team title with a 2112.
Top Kaua‘i finishers included Kendall Kusaka 173 (prone), 134 (standing), 151 (kneeling) for a total of 458, Dustin Russell 171 (prone), 147 (standing), 143 (kneeling) for a 461 total, and Marc Shibata 179 (prone), 115 (standing), 156 (kneeling) for a total of 450.
