Vulcans could host west regionals
By The Garden Island
BILLINGS, MT — Hawai‘i-Hilo remained the top-ranked team in the NCAA West Region men’s basketball poll this week. The Vulcans, who have just one game remaining, are 22-3 and have the best record in the region. If they win their final game Saturday at Hawai‘i Pacific, there is a strong chance that the Vulcans will host the NCAA West Regional in Hilo. BYU-Hawaii hosted the regional two years ago in La‘ie.
“These guys have played well enough to win 23 games and I’m amazed at that,” UHH Head Coach Jeff Law said. “It’s a nice feeling. It’s a nice atmosphere. It’s one where you don’t want to go out golfing yet. You still want the season to go.”
UH-Hilo has already clinched the PacWest title and automatic berth to the tournament. With the Vulcans’ win over HPU on Tuesday and BYU-Hawai‘i’s loss at Chaminade, UH-Hilo is guaranteed the conference championship.
“They’ve come together as a group and they’ve come together as a team,” Law said. “This is a real special thing that’s nice to see.”
