Kelsey Cadiente, a student at Chiefess Kamakahelei School, topped the Cadiente sisters’ cache of gold medals at the 22nd Annual Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet for O‘ahu and Kaua‘i.
The Cadiente sisters are no strangers to the national Hershey’s meet held in Hershey, Pa., and came home with three gold medals at the qualifying meet held Saturday, June 25 at the Kaiser High School Track & Field.
Kelsey Cadiente topped the 11-12 Girls Standing Long Jump just .5 inch ahead of Alana Aluli of Koolauloa, and topped the 11-12 Girls Softball Throw with a toss of 138 feet, 20 feet longer than runner up Kalynn Latu of Kahuku Summer Fun.
In the running events, Kelsey missed the cut with a fourth-place finish in the 11-12 Girls 100-yard dish on a 14.28 sprint, the top finisher, Andrea Hinkle tripping the clock at 13.50.
Kathleen, Kelsey’s older sister who came home with gold medals during her Hershey appearance, topped the 13-14 Girls Standing Long Jump on a leap of 7’5.25″ ahead of runner-up Joy Piotrowski who jumped 6’9.”
That was Kathleen’s sole gold medal as she finished runner-up in two other events, the 13-14 Girls 100-meter dash where she clocked in at 13.80, the winner, Courtney Honda of Hawai‘i Kai Track Club stopping the clock at 13.40.
Kathleen missed the cut on the 13-14 Girls 200-meter dash with a fourth finish at 25.53, missing the cut by just .13.
Isaac Fierro, running for the ‘Ele‘ele School track team that dominated the county’s age group track meet, finished with two gold medals, taking the 9-10 Boys 200-meter dash at 31.50 and topping the 9-10 Boys 400-meter dash at 1:15.6, almost two seconds faster than the runner up Matthew Fronda of the Mililani Track Club.
Clifton Callejo, also from ‘Ele‘ele, came home with a silver medal while just missing the cut on a second event, and finishing sixth in his third event. Callejo silvered in the 11-12 Boys 100-meter dash on a 14.00 sprint, just .10 shy of gold.
In the Boys 11-12 Softball Throw, Callejo missed the cut by .5 foot, his best throw netting 145.4 feet, while the top toss by Tyrend White flying 160.’
Callejo finished sixth in the 11-12 Boys 200-meter dash on a 31.75 performance, the top time being turned in by White at 28.80.
Micah Quinlan rounded out the ‘Ele‘ele School performers with a seventh-place finish in the 9-10 Boys Softball Throw on a toss of 90,’ the leader, Rashaan Falemalu of Koolauloa tossing 133 feet.
Wilcox Elementary School speedster Kaweli Lewis-Diamond came home with a gold and a silver medal.
Lewis-Diamond, who turned some heads at the county’s age group meets, silvered in the 9-10 Girls 100-meter dash a full second behind top finisher Kayla Taulapapa of Koolaulua who clocked in at 14.5, Lewis-Diamond stopping the clock at 15.50, but came back in the Girls 9-10 200-meter dash with a top time of 33.00 over Alyssa Kim of Mililani who clocked in at 33.50.
Taylor Ochoa of St. Catherine’s School pocketed a silver medal in the 9-10 Girls 50-meter dash on an 8.52 performance, falling to Talulapapa who finished the sprint at 7.69.
Ochoa also finished fifth in the 9-10 Girls Standing Long Jump on a 5′ leap.
Donovan Harrison of Kaua‘i rounded out the Kaua‘i contingent with a silver medal in the 11-12 Boys Standing Long Jump where he finished with a leap of 6’6.75,” the leader, Cole Wright of Mililani jumping 6’8.”
About 300 youngsters aged between 9 and 14 took part in this year’s event for O‘ahu and Kaua‘i track athletes.
For the first time in the program’s history, Hawai‘i and Maui county will hold their own qualifying meet.
According to Hershey Youth Program State chair, Rep. Dennis Arakaki, “The top competitors from the three meets are eligible for selection to the Pacific Southwest Regional Team which will compete against seven other regions of the United States and Canada.”
The national meet will be held at the Milton Hershey Field in Hershey, Pa. on Aug. 6.
Those athletes selected to the regional team will receive an all expenses paid trip to Hershey, Pa. for the 28th Annual National Meet.
