Kaua’i overmatched Kapa’a both offensively and defensively in a 27-8 win last night at Vidinha Stadium.
At first, it looked like another low scoring affair, after a 7-0 Red Raider lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the Kaua’i offense kicked into fifth gear and scored 20 points in the final period.
Lucky Andres recorded the first score of the game, thanks to a one yard pass from Kainoa Lemke (Frank Speetjens PAT) for the early 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
The score remained the same all the way until the 11:06 mark in the fourth quarter, as Lemke connected with Jett Jasper on a 4 yard TD strike (PAT failed). Then with 5:10 to go, Brendan Young scampered eight yards for another touchdown (Speetjens PAT) for the 20-0 lead.
Kaua’i added another score with 2:22 left in the contest, as Pono Matthews managed to cross the goal line on a 13 yard run (Speetjens PAT), which made the tally, 27-0.
Kapa’a got onto the scoreboard with just 45 seconds on the clock, as a trick play from Evan Lotu to Coty Salausa for 49 yards resulted in a long score.
Salausa and Lotu connected again for the two-point conversion, making the final score, 27-8.
Kaua’i moved to 3-0 on the season and Kapa’a dropped to 0-3. Meanwhile, the Menehune are in second-place at 2-1.
In the JV contest, Micah Alayvilla scored four times (32, 17, 53, 9) and Donovan Refamonte hit paydirt three times (2, 19, 36) for the 55-0 drubbing of Kapa’a. The Red Raiders have not allowed a point so far this season and moved to 3-0. Keli’e Ruiz scored the other touchdown in the second quarter. Sheldon Sakai and Blake Gingerich supplied the PAT’s.
KIF football resumes on Friday, as Waimea battles Kaua’i at Vidinha Stadium.
