Edward Robinson, 75, of Kekaha, an employee at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Lawa’i Kai, died in a one-vehicle accident when the truck he was driving crashed into a boulder off an NTBG service road.
Elizabeth Kali, a passenger in the pickup truck driven by Robinson, sustained head injuries, and was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
Her condition was not known as of presstime yesterday, according to county officials.
Robinson and Kali, both NTBG employees in an NTBG vehicle, were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, county officials said in a news release.
Robinson and Kali were heading down a steep portion of a roadway when the truck they were in collided with a large boulder. The vehicle then slid until it was stopped by a guardrail, according to Kaua’i Police Department investigators.
According to Kaua’i Police Department officials, alcohol does not appear to be a factor, but the inclement weather may have been a contributing factor in the accident.
Robinson is the first person on Kaua’i to die in a traffic accident this year.
