PO’IPU — She sometimes brings the wrong shoes to games and practices, she rarely trains and she doesn’t like to talk about or watch tennis, but she’s still the best on the island and only a freshman.
Kapa’a’s Lyndsey Tom made her KIF tennis debut yesterday at the Kiahuna Tennis Courts and she didn’t leave any doubt in anyone’s mind that she’s the girl to beat this season.
“I don’t like to talk about how good I am or about my games. I just play because it’s something to do,” Tom said after her 6-0, 6-0 win over Waimea’s Tiffany Lum.
According to junior tennis rankings, Tom is the top player in her age division in the state.
Her coach, Jon Tom, is also her father and in the high school ranks, it seems to make a difference for Lyndsey.
“Now he can tell me what to do, so I just listen,” Lyndsey said.
In junior tennis, Jon mentioned that Lyndsey has more free reign and when it comes down to practicing, she’s on his clock during the KIF season.
“You know, freshman can be so unpredictable, but she has to listen to me now,” Jon said jokingly.
Full results from yesterday’s matches will be published sometime this week.
Tom and Kapa’a battle Island School on Saturday at the Kiahuna Courts and the Kaua’i/Waimea matches will take place at around 2 p.m., following the Warrrior/Voyager contests, which begin at 12 noon.
