Taira turns in top performance

Her best sport isn’t even soccer, but she still managed to excel for the Red Raiders, who took the KIF title this season, with the help of their senior forward, Rachel Taira.

The reigning KIF girls basket-ball player of the year, punched in key goals and helped turn around Kaua’i’s early season slump.

Red Raider head coach took home top honors on the bench for the 2005-06 campaign.

The KIF girls all star team features forwards Cayla Kitabayashi of Waimea, Ka’ala Leong of Kapa’a, and Taira.

Kitabayashi, only a sophomore, was Waimea’s lone tough customer, when it came to scoring goals.

In the meantime, Leong terrorized opposing goalies once again this year. Her hard-nosed approach almost led her team to the top.

Kaua’i senior Emma Makepa-Foley bruised her way through the field and was a driving force behind Kaua’i’s comeback.

Brittney Carvalho, a Kapa’a junior, mirrored Makepa-Foley, with physical play throughout the season, which handed her a midfield all-star spot.

The other top midfielder was Megan Vento, a Kaua’i junior, who utilized quickness to set up key scores.

Kaua’i and Kapa’a each placed two defenders on the all-star squad in Allison Arakaki and Tiffany Ikeda-Simao of Kaua’i and Erin Pickett and Amniesty Ragsac of Kapa’a.

Arakaki and Ikeda-Simao played pesky ball, interrupting opponents’ attempts on the way to the title.

Both Pickett and Ragsac, last year’s KIF player of the year, led Kapa’a once again this year, keeping the scores in the Warriors’ favor.

Kaua’i senior K.C. Gaitos grabbed all-star goalie honors and Kaua’i junior Auika Muragin earned utility accolades.

The KIF Girls Soccer All-Stars were chosen by the coaches.
