Bankers warn of identity-theft scams
- Members of the Hawaii Bankers Association (HBA) warned consumers in a press release to protect themselves against identity theft by safeguarding and monitoring their personal account information. The growing problem of online phishing scams and other forms of attempted identity theft continue to target people across the state.
Phishing con artists claim to be from a reputable bank or company, and send out thousands of fake e-mails and fake Webpage images to try to lure consumers to respond by providing account information, Social Security numbers, credit-card numbers, passwords or other sensitive information. This information can then be used by thieves to order goods and services, or obtain credit.
“Banks would never call or e-mail customers to ask for personal, confidential account information,” said Rodney Shinkawa, HBA executive director. “Anyone who receives an unsolicited e-mail should delete it immediately and report it to their financial institution.” Monitor your account carefully, and if you feel it has been compromised, notify officials at your bank immediately, he said.
