The Hui Alu Okinawan Club announced the recipients of their $1000 scholarships last week.
Kaua‘i High Seniors Lauren Chun and Amy Ueunten, Waimea High’s Kasey Barcelona and Kapa‘a High’s Kira Furugen were this year’s four recipients.
Chun will pursue either English or history at George Washington University this fall. Her goal is to attend law school after she receives her bachelor’s degree.
Ueunten is planning for a career as a secondary school math teacher. She will work on her education degree at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo this fall.
Barcelona will attend Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., this fall with the intention of majoring in engineering.
Furgen will attend Chapman University. She has an extensive commitment to music but is currently undecided as to what she will major in.
Every year, the Hui Alu Okinawan club awards a graduating senior from each of the three public high schools and one at-large student.
