The Koloa Gold and Black Tigers, an AYSO Under 6 boys team, proved that point throughout the season and again at Saturday’s Soccerfest finale.
With each passing game, the little Tigers grew in ability and soccer sense.
“Some learned how to kick the ball overhead while others mastered reversing the direction of the ball with a ‘U-turn kick,’” said Doug Sears, a team parent.
“Mostly, the Tigers enjoyed their time together before and after the games, socializing and enjoying the delicious treats handed out at halftime and at the end of the game.”
At the start of each game, coaches Merrill Yavinsky and Skye Griep would quiz the Tigers about the most important things to remember on game day. The response was an enthusiastic, unanimous response — “Listen to coach, play soccer and have fun!”
Following the final Soccerfest games, each Tiger was rewarded with a trophy. Team parents and players presented the coaches with their special mahalo — a team photo signed by each Tiger.
Ryan Yavinsky, Benjamin Griep, Andrew Aquinaldo-Fune, Jackson Evans, Douglas Sears and Dodger Middlebrook wore the yellow jerseys emblazoned with the black stripe of the Tigers.
En route to the Soccerfest, one father noticed a less-than-enthusiastic mood from his Tiger who said, “Dad, I’m sad that it’s the last day of this soccer season.”
But the Tigers will be back — and a little bigger — next season.
