Two nationally recognized speakers will deliver the keynote addresses next week at the two-day Kauai Living Pathways 2006 Conference that starts Wednesday.
The Ke Ala Hele Makalae (Kaua‘i Coastal Path) committee has invited Jeff Shoemaker and Ed McBrayer to provide perspective and expertise in creating healthy and safe pathway systems that will benefit communities around the island.
Shoemaker, executive director of Denver’s Greenway Foundation, is one of the visionaries who successfully revitalized Denver’s metro area by creating integrated waterways and trails connecting the city’s various communities with an urban core.
McBrayer is the executive director of Atlanta’s PATH Foundation, which builds and manages a statewide bicycle and pedestrian path network throughout Georgia.
The conference begins with a 21/2 hour program Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Aloha Beach Resort, which is free and open to the public.
Thursday will feature an intensive all-day workshop at the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mayoral administrative assistant Gary Heu, county Building Division chief Doug Haigh, traffic engineering manager Alvin Takeshita, the Hawaii Bicycle League’s Kristi Schulenberg and Hawaii Community Foundation founder Deborah Rice will join the keynote speakers to collaborate with conference participants in envisioning and laying the foundation for Kaua‘i’s unique living pathway system.
Tickets are $20 and include continental breakfast and lunch.
