Kaua‘i outgunned the Warriors 12-7 in the opening quarter, but Kapa‘a came back with a 19-11 second period for a 3-point halftime lead.
In the second, hit two of his four treys. Thomas Gausepohl, the second-leading scorer for Kapa‘a with a dozen marks in the game, chipped in four.
From there, Kapa‘a held Kaua‘i to single-digit scoring in the third and fourth quarters while continuing to build the lead.
Cody Abigania added 9 points and Stephen Greenleaf finished with 4 for Kapa‘a.
Austin Simao chalked up 7 of his 11 points in the first half to lead the JV Raiders’ efforts. Teila Huni followed with 8 points, Scott Taylor added 7 points and Lester Alacar chipped in 5 to round out the Kaua‘i leaders.
Kapa‘a hosts Waimea Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. to open Round 2 of the KIF basketball season.

KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i almost pulled off a sweep, but Kapa‘a head coach Rory Rayno called a time out to settle the Warriors who held on for a 7-6 win yesterday.
But for Kaua‘i the season is not over as they prepare to face Waimea, the KIF Round 2 title-holders, for the KIF championship Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Isenberg Park.
After taking Game 1 on a 14-2 note, Kaua‘i coach Darrell Borrero rotated Jessica Iwata onto the pitcher’s mound for Game 2.
Kapa‘a mustered 5 runs off Iwata who finished with 3 walks, allowed 2 hits and struck out one before starter Wailana Borrero returned to finish.
Faced with no more games, Rayno started Loke Manaku in Game 1 and Cassie Mundon in Game 2.
Mundon gave up 4 runs to Kaua‘i on 3 hits while walking four straight Raiders before starter Stephanie Kawamura returned to duty.
Iwata, leading the Kaua‘i bats in Game 1 with 3 RBI on 2 hits and scoring three times, was 3-3 in Game 2, scoring twice.
Sam Koga, 3-3 in Game 1 with 3 RBI, added 2 RBI on 1 hit in Game 2.
Jocelyn Enrique, who scored for Kapa‘a in Game 1, added 2 hits, scored twice and had 2 RBI in Game 2. Maka Ferreira added 2 RBI on 1 hit in Game 2.
