KALAHEO — Coming off the heels of the county’s 14 and Under girls basketball season, the Kaulupono Girls basketball program launched a holiday tournament.
Gee’s Angels, winning the county’s 14 and Under league by virtue of a one-loss season, split in the final day of the Kaulupono tournament.
Mahealani Hanie-Grace netted a dozen points in the final day to give the Angels a 44-15 margin over hosting Kaulupono who got 6 points from Shayna Alop.
But in the 15’s, the Angels, again led by Hanie-Grace and 10 points, dropped the decision 47-23 against Kaulupono. Natalie Mata sparked the Kaulupono win on 16 points.
The Angels, tenacious on both sides of the ball, demonstrated their prowess in the Friday night matchup against Island Heat when the green-shirted Heat lost three of their players to fouls in the waning minutes of the game.
However, despite having no bench and just two players remaining on the court, the Heat would not concede against the Angels.
Battling back from a 13-10 halftime deficit, the Heat outshot the Angels 10-6 in the final frame to drop the decision 28-25.
Hanie-Grace topped the Angels’ performance in that win on a 16-point showing followed by Kristle Henry contributing 6 points.
Kaira Kupihea led the Heat with 11 points before being buzzed to the bench, joining teammates Kayla Perez and Teal Basquez.
That left just Cierra Mayer and Jennifer Grady on the court with both guards ending the night on 6- and 2-point shows.
Kupihea rebounded Saturday to lead the Heat to a 37-4 win over the Hanama‘ulu Jammers. She netted 13 points.
