HANAPEPE — Despite a strong defensive challenge put up by the Waimea JV girls soccer team, Kaua‘i dribbled in a pair of goals for a 2-0 win Saturday.
Working with a strong breeze coming off the ocean, the Red Raider women kept the ball on the Menehune side of the field and on a near-point blank shot by Britney Gardner, the Menehune goalie, Erin Connelly, misjudged the ball that dribbled past her and into the net.
“I was praying the ball had enough power to make it in,” one spectator said following the Kaua‘i win.
It did, and Kaua‘i took a 1-0 lead into the half, despite an otherwise strong performance from Connelly.
The second half was even more of a defensive slugfest, the only goal coming on a casual lob by Loree Rapozo that settled into the back of the net. With that, the Red Raiders sewed up a 2-0 win.
Earlier in the day, the Kaua‘i JV boys routed Waimea 6-0 behind two goals from Dwight Fujimoto.
Colson Fernandez, Lucas Riley, Noa Chun and Michael Petro all scored a goal each in the win.
Kaua‘i takes on Kapa‘a Saturday at Vidinha Stadium with the first contest getting under way at 10:45 a.m.
