Jean Sueoka
Jean Kikuye Uyeda Sueoka of Koloa, and Tustin, Calif., died on May 12, 2007, at the age of 72.
Born in O‘ahu on April 30, 1935, she was a retired secretary with Wackenhut Security.
She is survived by son Steve (Margaret) Sueoka of Kapa‘a, daughters Sandra Sueoka of California, Karen (Duane) Samiano of Koloa, Cindy Sueoka of California; sisters May (Blaise) Nakagawa of Nevada, Judy (Milton) Chang of O’ahu, Gale Nohara of O’ahu; and five grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at Koloa Union Church, where services will begin at 10:30 a.m.
On O‘ahu, friends may visit with the family from 5 a.m. on Friday, May 25, at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, Honolulu, O’ahu, where services will begin at 6 p.m.
Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.
Vilma Gatchalian
Vilma Paguia Gatchalian of Gilbert, Ariz., died on May 11, 2007, at Banner Hospital in Mesa, Ariz., at the age of 74.
Born in Sorsogon, Philippines, on April 27, 1933, she was a retired optometrist and a long-time resident of Kalaheo. Vilma was a parishioner of Holy Cross Church and a very active Filipino Catholic Club member, a pioneer of the Misa de Gallo at the parish, a member of the Bailes de Jose Dance Troupe and a member of Kauai Visayan Club.
She is survived by her husband, Solomon Gatchalian, numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial services will be held on Kaua‘i at a later date.
Ann Louise Martins
Ann Louise Martins of Kapa‘a died May 18, 2007, at her home at the age of 80.
Born in Honolulu, she was a retired cafeteria worker for St. Catherine School.
She is survived by her husband Edward Martins of Kapa‘a, sons Donald Engwer of Kapa‘a, Edward (Maria) Martins Jr. of Kapa‘a and Thomas (Clarice) Martins of Kapa‘a; daughters Susan (Humphrey) Hernandez of Kapa‘a and Judith (Garry) Cole of Missouri; sister Nancy Young of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
At Ann’s request, private services will be held.
Arrangements are being handled by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
Steven Roy Aluag
Steven Roy Aluag died in Philadelphia, Penn., on April 19, 2007, at the age of 65.
Born in Waimea on May 28, 1941, he was a decorated Viet Nam War veteran and a Bronze Star recipient with various military honors. He retired from the U.S. Army as a major. During his younger days, he was employed at O‘ahu Transport and Ed & Don’s on O‘ahu. He was employed by the U.S. Treasury as an IRS lead contact representative, until his death.
He is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter from a previous marriage Stacey Aluag (Ryan) Endo, brothers Ronald (Ada) Aluag; Stanley (Rose) Aluag; Albert Aluag and sister Audrey (Paul) Swanson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents Estanislao and Florence Aluag, and brother, Milton Aluag.
A celebration of his life was held on May 15, at the Holy Trinity Church in New Jersey.
His inurnment will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on O‘ahu on Wednesday, June 20, at 11:30 a.m. The family suggests casual attire and requests that flowers be omitted.
Richard Seichi Hirano
Richard Seichi Hirano of Kalaheo died May 16, 2007, in Honolulu at the age of 86.
Born Jan. 12, 1921, in Wahiawa, he retired as a heavy truck mechanic with Kauai Commercial Company.
He is survived by sons Tracy (Marjorie) Hirano of ‘Ele‘ele and Roy (Lisa) Hirano of Kalaheo, daughters Alison (Clyde) Shigema-tsu of Lawa‘i, Janice (Garry) Ueoka Kemp of O‘ahu; stepson Marvin (Jean) Vierra and family of North Carolina; stepdaughter Glenda Vierra and family of Kalaheo; brothers Fusao Bob (Haruko) Hirano of ‘Oma‘o, Philip (Jane) Hirano of O‘ahu; sisters Ellen Kawakami of Kalaheo and Yukie (Meyer) Ueoka of Maui; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Friends may visit with the family at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Memorial services officiated by Father Edson will begin at 10:30 a.m. The family requests aloha or casual attire and no flowers.
