HONOLULU — Nani Dennis scored 16 points yesterday to lift the Waimea High School girls basketball team to a win in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball Division II State Tournament.
The Menehune avoided being tossed into the consolation round by beating St. Andrews Priory 52-50, at the Farrington High School Gym.
Moani Durant finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Josey Jacinto banked three 3-pointers to finish with 9 points.
Waimea led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, only to have that lead taken away from them in the second. St. Andrews caught up in the second, leading into the half by 1.
St. Andrews shot up in the third outscoring Waimea 13 to 7. But it wasn’t enough, as Waimea went on a scoring spree to finish on top.
The Menehune now face second-seeded McKinley High School tonight at 8 p.m.
