KIF golfers finish out of top 15
Kaua‘i’s female golfers finished well out of the top 15 spots at this year’s David Ishii Hawai‘i State Girls Golf Championships yesterday at the Waikoloa King’s Course.
Kapa‘a High School’s Malia Saiki was the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s highest finisher with a score of (86-97) 183.
Kaua‘i High School’s Rae-Lyn Morikawa shot (90-96) 186. Teammate Kristi Rapozo shot a (109-99) 208 and Waimea High School’s Les-lyn Ibara was one stroke behind Rapozo at (105-104) 209.
Punahou School’s Anna Jang battled the windy conditions to win the individual championship. The Punahou sophomore and Maui High junior Kelcie Kawano were tied with a score of 159 after 36 holes in the final day of competition.
In the sudden-death tie-breaker, Kawano double bogeyed the 17th hole while Jang came up with a par to seal the victory. The two were neck-and-neck the entire way after both shot a six-over-par 78 after the first round.
Jang’s performance (78-81) of 159 also helped the Buffanblu claim its first team title in the nine years of the girls championship with team total 495. See limited results in today’s Scoreboard.
USGA conducts qualifier
The United States Golf Association hosts a Local Open Qualifier today at Poipu Bay Golf Course. Twenty golfers will play for one qualifying spot.
The low scoring qualifier advances to a Sectional Qualifying event, and will play for a chance to compete in the US Open Golf Championship at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
The first tee time will be at 7 a.m. and the last at 8 a.m. Play is expected to complete by 12:30 p.m. or shortly thereafter, with any playoff or the award ceremony to follow immediately.
