Katsuko Matsuyama
Katsuko Matsuyama of Lihu‘e died Aug. 11, 2007, at Garden Island Healthcare Center. She was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Koloa.
She is survived by: husband Sueo “Joe” Matsuyama of Lihu‘e; daughters Debra (Kenneth) Okuno of Honolulu, Joni (Gilbert) Cabot of Puhi, and Iris (Chad) Manoi of ‘Ele‘ele; sisters Betty Oshiro of Honolulu, Madeline (Boxer) Matsuda of ‘Ele‘ele, and Alice (Paul) Kamiya of Kane‘ohe; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Yone Gushiken of Honolulu; nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family at 3 p.m. on Monday, at Koloa Missionary Church, where memorial services will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m.
Casual attire is suggested.
Ernest Alexander Smith
Ernest Alexander Smith, of Hilo, died Aug. 17, 2007, at Hilo Medical Center at the age of 88.
Born June 11, 1919, in Papaikou, Hawai‘i, he was the retired Director of Purchasing for C. Brewer and Co. and former manager of Kilauea Sugar Co. He was a past-president of the Rotary Club of South Hilo (Tuesday Club), member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #9 (Puna), and President of the Ostomy Support Group for more than 26 years and was awarded the American Cancer Society’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2002.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Hilo at 1407 Kapiolani St. Casual attire is requested and that flowers be omitted. In lieu of memorial donations to the family, they request a donation be made to the Church of the Holy Apostles in memory of Ernest Alexander Smith.
He is survived by daughters Judith Rowan of Martinez, Calif., and Sandra Smith of Kilauea; sons Robert (Cecilia) Smith of Honaunau, Keith (Gail) Smith of ‘Oma‘o, Gary (Bebe) Smith of Kilauea and Jeffrey Smith of Kurtistown; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Dodo Mortuary, Inc. in Hilo, HI.
Charles John Phillips
Charles John Phillips of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Aug. 10, 2007, at the age of 51. He was born in Waukegan, IL on Dec. 30, 1955.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his son Raymond of Kenosha, WI; mother Virginia Phillips of Maob, Utah; and two sisters Dolores (Dolly) Thompson of Maob, Utah and Alexis Sweet of Mesa, Ariz.
Private services will be held at a later date. Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Phillips family with the arrangements.
Felix Castelo Jr.
Felix (Dong) Castelo Jr. of Kilauea died at home on Aug. 22, 2007, at the age of 80.
Born in Kilauea on March 18, 1927, he was a groundskeeper for Princeville Corporation.
Preceded in death by his parents Felix and Raphaela Castelo, Sr.; sisters Rose Lopez, Eleanor Kinney; brothers John Castelo, Peter Castelo, and Donald Castelo, he is survived by sisters Felisa Villanueva, Mary (Masa) Yoshimura, and Charlene (Eddie) Sarita; brothers Edward (Sidra) Castelo and Joseph Castelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Sylvester’s Church in Kilauea, where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
The family suggests casual attire and asks that flowers be omitted. Burial to follow immediately at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Yolanda Cabinatan
Yolanda Tabura Cabinatan of Hanama‘ulu died at home on Aug. 20, 2007, at the age of 58.
Born on Kaua‘i on Feb. 3, 1949, she was an accounting clerk at the Hilton Beach Resort.
She is survived by her husband Panfilo, daughter Lisa (Damon Summers), son Leonard, sisters Lourdes (Norman) Agoot, Marie (Tomoo) Hiranaka, Sally Ann (Jeff) Wright-Callejo, Katherine (Larry) Akau, Melanie (Michael) Marshall, Tanya (Tabura) Begley, Robin Domingo, Andralyn Corbin, and Anel Perreira; brothers Venancio Baran Tabura, Clifford (Danet) Lee, Derwyn (Cecil) Ujano, and Kevin Lee (Aimee) Tabura; eight grandchildren, Chyson and Alyssa Chow-Cabinatan, Wesric Kaneakua Jr, Taryn and Bailey Summers, Lenele Rodrigues Cabinatan, Lance Kekoa Cabinatan, and Madisyn Cabinatan; three great-grandchildren, Keilyn Hashimoto, Kimana Cabinatan, and Ayden Cacabelos.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, at Immaculate Conception Church. Scattering of ashes to follow at Kapa‘a Bay. Casual attire is suggested and that flowers be omitted.

Joseph Katsumi Nakazawa
Joseph Katsumi Nakazawa of Kilauea died Aug. 18, 2007, at Queen’s Hospital at the age of 37.
Born July 1, 1970, in Lihu‘e, he was a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by his wife: Leeander Boiser-Nakazawa of Kilauea; daughters Asia Boiser Nakazawa of Kilauea, Kalia Boiser of Kilauea and Kira Boiser of Kilauea, father Jac kie Nakazawa of Kilauea, mother Letha Nakazawa of Oregon, brother Robb Maxfield of Florida, sister Lisa; special friends, uncles aunts and cousins.
The family suggests casual attire and asks that flowers be omitted.
Friends may visit with the family at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 2, at Anini Beach, where a celebration of Joseph’s life will be at 1 p.m. A potluck gathering will follow.

Dean Hesapene
Dean Patrick Hesapene died on Aug. 16, 2007, at Balboa Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 51.
Born on April 19, 1956, in Waimea, he is preceded in death by his brother Kenneth “Choch” Hesapene and his mother-in-law Rosalita Ogawa. He is survived by his wife Juno, his children Jeremy, Channin and Jessica and his grandson Jaylen, all of San Diego. He is also survived by parents Cora and Magua Hesapene of Kekaha, brothers Marvin (Iris) and David (Camille) of Hanapepe, sisters Verna (Mike) Kirsch of Bremerton, Wash., Sharon (Byron) Ariola of Lihu‘e and Audrey (Steve) Franco of Kekaha.
Visitation with family will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 8, at St. Theresa’s Church in Kekaha, Rosary will follow. The celebration of Dean’s life will be at 2 p.m. at the Kekaha Neighboorhood Center. Balboa Cremation Services assisted the Hesapene family with cremation arrangements.
Ruth I. Bedwell
Ruth I. Bedwell of Koloa, died Aug. 17, 2007, at her home at the age of 65.
Born April 22, 1942, in Harkau, Hungary, she was a degreed registered nurse. She worked 36 years in hospital leadership positions. She was a nursing administrative supervisor in California, a nursing instructor, and health evaluator for the state of California. Ruth designed and implemented the first nurse-to-patient-care ratio in the United States. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross and CASA and a member of the Church Council of the Lihu‘e Lutheran Church. She was also active in the County Supervisor political arena for California.
She is survived by her mother Ida Thumberger of Lihu‘e; daughters Wency Wilson of Koloa and Heather Santesteban of Kalaheo and two grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church, where service will begin at 10 a.m. Inurnment to follow the celebration of life in the church cemetery.
Donations may be made to Kaua‘i Hospice.

Nicasio Balisacan
Nicasio Balisacan of Kapa‘a, died Aug. 16, 2007. at his home at the age of 96.
Born Dec. 14, 1910, in the Philippines, he was a laborer.
He is survived by his wife Erlinda Balisacan; son Arnel (Jackie) Balisacan; daughters Lorelei (Rey Tumamao) Balisacan; grandson Chasen Tumamao and granddaughter Jada Ines; Spottie and Kui-Girl.
Family and friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Sept. 1, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a where Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Lihu‘e Cemetery.
