WAIMEA — Brytney Yadao-Lanning came up with big defensive plays for Waimea High School last night in the Menehune’s win over Kapa‘a High School in four games, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-13. She made six major blocks for the Menehune, 3 double and 3 solo.
Waimea is now 2-0 for Round 2 of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation play and 4-2 overall. Kapa‘a falls back a game at 1-1 for Round 2 and 2-4 overall.
Kapa‘a seemed tired at times, which could partially be explained by the few amount of players they had on its bench. Kapa‘a was without libero Megan Souza and hitters Kyah Schneider and Jondi Das, forcing to keep its players in for the majority of play.
They were, however, still able to put up a fight against Waimea, who had its offensive team in full force. Kapa‘a had the early lead in Game 1, but was overthrown right at the tail-end of the game. Waimea won by five points.
Waimea went on to win Game 2 as well, but Kapa‘a pulled out the stops in Game 3. The two teams went point-for-point until Kapa‘a was able to pull ahead. Setter Mailika Napoleon connected with Leilani Laranio for a kill that sent her to serve for game point. In the play, a short pass by Napoleon set up a tip by Tori Tuttle to put it away.
The momentum quickly died though as Waimea beat Kapa‘a in a short Game 4. A kill by Tia Agader sealed the victory for Waimea.
Tatum Gonsalves hit 17 kills and Agader had nine. Josey Jacinto tossed up 21 assists and had six kills. Qyla Parangao, who was sharing setting duties with Jacinto, followed with 19 assists and two aces.
For Kapa‘a, Napoleon had 16 assists and an ace. Senior teammate Maliana Hamada had seven kills and three aces. Tuttle posted seven blocks, 4 double and 3 solo.
Kapa‘a next plays Kaua‘i High School on Saturday at Kaua‘i’s gym.
