Pu’uwai Canoe Club will be hosting a Double Hull Outrigger Canoe Race for children and adults with disabilities at 9 a.m. March 1 at theWailua River. A double-hull canoe is created by lashing two traditional six-man canoes together with 4-by-4-by-10.
Pu’uwai Canoe Club will be hosting a Double Hull Outrigger Canoe Race for children and adults with disabilities at 9 a.m. March 1 at theWailua River. A double-hull canoe is created by lashing two traditional six-man canoes together with 4-by-4-by-10.
Also known as a twelve-person canoe, this style of canoe is very stable, Pu‘u Wai President Brian Curll said.
Each double hull canoe will hold six trained paddlers and six persons with disabilities in its twelve seats. Volunteer paddlers welcome.
Three double-hull canoes will go up the Wailua River and make their way single file to the Hawaiian Village and back and then will line up at the marina and race to the finish. Each heat should take about one hour.
No training or previous paddling experience is required.
Those hosting the event will “make every effort to accommodate each person’s unique disability,” Curll said.
“Our primary concern is to provide a fun, safe, event,” he said.
Games, contests and music will be done during and between the different heats.
Hui O Mana Ka Pu’uwai Outrigger Canoe Club will run the races and ARC of Kaua‘i will organize the games, events and music. Ho‘omana will provide the prizes. Lunch will be provided. There is no charge to the participants of this event, but a $10 donation for club paddlers and volunteers is suggested, Curll said.
