Chris Kaiakapu allowed no run and gave up just one hit to lead Hanapepe to a 13-3 win over Kalaheo, Sunday.
Kainoa Pezario (2-3) and Leighton Otoman (3-4) drove in seven runs to lead the Makaweli Indians to their 13-5 win over Waimea in the second contest of the Americans of Japanese Ancestry baseball league at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaiakapu, who threw for four innings, got support from the Hanapepe bat box as the Rivermen piled up 11 hits on their 13-run total while Kaiakapu struck out five Kalaheo batters and walked an equal amount.
The Rivermen lost little time getting in the books as their first three batters made contact with Dwayne Miyasato pitches and ended scoring for an early 3-0 lead.
Kaiakapu kept Kalaheo scoreless until the fifth inning when the Kaneshiro Farmers were able to push their only three runs across the place when Kainoa Santos doubled to open the frame.
With one out, Kaina McCallum drove Santos across the plate, and advanced on another single from Keola McCallum. Both runners scored on a Troy Kaneshiro bang.
Following its 3-run opening frame, Hanapepe added another trio of runs in the fourth inning before a 7-run seventh inning for its final arithmetic.
Leadoff hitter Justin Ganaden (2-4) doubled twice and drove in two runs while scoring twice to lead the Hanapepe bats.
Wendall Nonaka finished 3-5 with two doubles and a single with three runs driven in while scoring once. Vince Nitta (1-3) drove in two runs. Kevin Suga (1-3), Tyrus Matsumoto (1-4) and Scott Yamase (1-2) each had an RBI in the win. Mason Lorenzo and Brandon Hashimoto each singled in the win.
Kaneshiro (1-3), doubled and drove in two runs to lead Kalaheo. He was followed by Kaina McCallum (2-4) who had an RBI. Santos (2-2) doubled and singled and Keola McCallum (2-3) and Dave Bukoski (1-4) each had hits.
Miyasato suffered the loss for Kalaheo with 11 runs allowed on 9 hits given up while striking out one and walking five.
Kainoa Pezario (2-3) and Otoman (3-4) paced the Makaweli hitting with four and three runs driven home, respectively.
Sean Jardin (2-4), Royce Ijima (2-2), Brad Chiba (2-5) and Jason Miyazaki (2-3) each finished with an RBI.
Ikaika Pezario (3-3), Brad Murayama (1-1) and Travis Shigeta (1-3) rounded out the Indians’ timber.
Keonimana Shigematsu (1-2) and Kelii Shigematsu (0-1) each notched RBI for the Tsunami who came up short following its inaugural season win last week. Dylan Ishihara and Ahren Kaneshiro each finished 1-1 in the batter’s box for Waimea.
Jason Nakata picked up the win for Makaweli on the mound in five innings of work where he allowed two runs while giving up two hits, striking out seven Waimea batters and walking five.
Todd Koishigawa came in for three innings, giving up a run on one hit while striking out one and walking one.
Kaneshiro suffered the loss in one and one-third inning where he gave up seven runs on eight hits, striking out no Makaweli batters and walking one.
Waimea got help from Ishihara, Steve Werner and Ed Yamase on the mound.
Sunday’s double-header moves back to Vidinha Stadium starting at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
