KILAUEA — Kekai Gonsalves netted a game-high 22 points, but Wailua came up short 43-26 against Kaulupono Girls in Kilauea.
Earlier in the evening, the Kilauea Hui demonstrated its joy at being able to hone a 21-16 edge over the Island Heat in the first of three games played in the county’s 13 and Under girls basketball program.
That game was followed by Mahea Hanie-Grace and Kristle Henry taking the reins of the Gee’s Angels who dominated the Lihu‘e Kamikaze 48-12.
Gonsalves was just one of only five Wailua players who showed up against a full bench of Kaulupono Girls with her game-total reflecting 22 of the team’s 26-point showing.
Despite being outnumbered, the Wailua greenshirts never faltered, Cheyenne Abigania netting 2 points and Katelina Fifita adding another pair to round out its showing.
Vakeesha Lagazo paced the Kaulupono showing with 13 points followed by Rea Plotado and Nicole Palacio adding 8 points apiece.
The balanced scoring show continued with Nicolei Banasihan adding six and Cheyenne Duarte finished with five.
Shayna Alop and Ashlyn Bueno each paired to round out the books.
Rachel Hinkle popped 3-point bombs in each of Kilauea Hui’s two 5-0 frames to take a 21-16 win over Island Heat in a see-saw battle.
Island Heat held an 8-7 edge at the half, but no one gained an edge until the fifth period when Hinkle netted 5 of the Hui’s 7-6 frame including another 3-point bomb. Paulette Guerro scored her game-total 2 points in that frame.
Hinkle’s trey and a bucket from Kanoe Kuwabara, her only score in the contest, accounted for the final math in the sixth period.
Hinkle topped the Hui scoring with 11 points followed by Ethelyn Calvan adding 4 first-half pointsm and Guerro, Kuwabara and Vanessa Ortal’s pairs rounding out the books.
Island Heat, battling bouts with the flu bug, got 4 points from Taylor Garcia and Shay Orial with 3 points from Courtney Contrades who also added a strong inside game in the effort. Makana Fujimoto and Kylie Barba each netted pairs in the effort.
Hanie-Grace took the lead for the Angels with 14 points followed by Henry adding 13 points.
But beyond that, the two Angel guards worked at trying to get Joy Claypoole to mark.
That didn’t work as only Lauren Claypoole was able to post 7 points. Reggie McCabe set the crowd on fire when she dropped a near-half court trey at the buzzer of the fifth period.
That counted toward her 8 points, and Riana Ralston rounded out the math with 4 points.
Lacey Lucas and Bristy-Ann Agu topped the Kamikaze effort with 5 points apiece followed by Kawehi Louis-Diamond.
