WAIMEA — Racing in near-ideal conditions, the Niumalu Canoe Club swept both the Open Mens and Women’s division at the annual Kilohana Canoe Race, yesterday.
The long distance race which started at the Waimea Pier, traversed the shoreline to Kaumakani and back to Waimea, covering a distance of about eight miles with the Niumalu women crossing at 58:57 for top honors.
Similarly, the Niumalu men’s crew slipped past the finish buoy at 54:36.
In the Women’s Open race, just a little more than five minutes spaced out the top three boats with Na Molokama crossing at 1:00 for second place and a second Niumalu team stopping the clock at 1:02.34 for third place. Pu‘uwai, tripping the timer at 1:09.11 finished fourth.
The Men’s Open race was even tighter with the first three boats crossing within three minutes of each other as a Pu‘uwai team chased Niumalu across the line at 55:35 followed by another Niumalu team at 55:51 for second and third places, respectively.
P.South topped the Women’s Masters division on a 1:04.43 paddle followed by Hanalei and a second P.South crew at 1:01.15 and 1:12.21, respectively.
Niumalu (1:06.04) topped the Women’s Sr. Masters division followed by Kaiola (1:07.10).
Hanalei topped the Women OM division with a 55:59.72 finish followed by Pu‘uwai (59.31) and Niumalu (1:01.13) on the leader board. Other finishers in the division included P.South, Pu‘uwai, Kilohana, Kaiola “A” and Kaiola “B.”
Kaiola topped the Novice Men (1:00.04), and the Master Men (58.30) divisions.
Kilohana finished runner up in the Novice Men class on a 1:03.27 paddle, and Namolokama topped the Sr Master Men with a 58.58 paddle.
