HANAPEPE — The Hanapepe Rivermen, posting a 9-5 win over Kalaheo, Sunday, will face the Makaweli Indians, a 14-4 winner over the Waimea Tsunami, in the final regular season game of the Americans of Japanese Ancestry baseball league.
That game will take place Sunday at the Vidinha Stadium starting at 10 a.m. Kalaheo will take on Lihu‘e in the nightcap.
Tyrus Matsumoto sparked the Rivermen’s victory, finishing 3-for-5 in the batter’s box, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
His first shot came in the opening inning where Hanapepe capitalized off the Kalaheo mound, driving home seven runs on five hits, two Kalaheo errors and three walks.
Matsumoto drove in two runs on an RBI single to leftfield and added another RBI to the same location in the fourth inning where Hanapepe scored its remaining two runs.
Kelly Robinson (3-5) finished with two singles and a double with an RBI, scoring once and getting a stolen base. Wendall Nonaka (2-4) also drove in a run, scored once and finished with a stolen base. Kevin Suga (1-4) drove in a run and came up with a stolen base.
Kainoa Santos (1-4) paced the Kalaheo bats with two RBI followed by Dave Bukoski (1-4) driving in a run and scoring one run. Zoomie Bukoski (2-4) and Troy Kaneshiro (2-4) drove in a run each.
Leighton Otoman had the hot bat for Makaweli which came back from a 3-2 deficit in the fourth inning.
With one away in that frame, Kainoa Pezario got aboard on a walk and scored on an RBI single to leftfield by Jason Miyazaki bringing up Otoman.
The Makaweli shortstop whacked into a 3-run homer to drive Cody Dotario, getting first on a fielder’s choice, and Miyazaki across the plate for a 6-4 lead.
Otoman (2-6) finished with a double and the HR while driving home 5 runs and scored twice.
Ikaika Pezario (3-7), Travis Shigeta (1-3), Royce Ijima (1-6), and Miyazaki (3-6) each chalked up an RBI apiece.
Ahren Kaneshiro (1-4) led the Waimea bats with an RBI and scored once.
Kailan Malama (0-2) and Dylan Ishihara (0-3) also posted an RBI each. Ian Imamura, Jordan Kitabaya-shi and Liko Perreira joined Kaneshiro in scoring for Waimea.
