With no outs in the second inning, Jessica Iwata laced a shot to right-centerfield, and on a non-stop turn at first base, ended up beating the throw to second base.
That set up Jasper who conked another to rightfield, scoring Iwata for the 1-0 lead which stood for the remainder of the contest.
With the one-run win, Kaua‘i clinches the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title for the fourth straight year.
Kapa‘a, finishing with a 4-7 overall record, 2-3 in the second round, with one more game remaining in its schedule, will also be representing the KIF at the upcoming Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s stage girls softball championships, said Gregg Gonsalves, the Kapa‘a athletic director.
Kaua‘i, 4-0 in the second round, 9-1 overall, next plays Waimea (0-3 in Round 2, 2-6 overall) on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the Waimea Canyon Park.
In the win, Wailana Borrero went the distance for Kaua‘i, allowing no runs and just two Kapa‘a hits while striking out nine Warrior batters and allowing no walks.
Malina Obar had one of her best outings of the season, despite the Kapa‘a shortfall. Obar, the freshman hurler, allowed just three Kaua‘i hits, while striking out one and walking one in the loss.
Joining Iwata and Jasper in the hitter’s column, Amanda Mayer was 1-2 with a single for Kaua‘i.
Hanalei Gomes, the Warriors’ catcher, and Larae Hoopii each singled for Kapa‘a.
