Verizon adds cell sites on Kaua‘i
Verizon Wireless has added a new cell site on Kaua‘i in Lihu‘e.
The site is located on Puhi Road and will provide expanded coverage for calls, e-mail, messages and downloads. It will also enhance “in-building” coverage for the Kaua‘i Community College, Puhi Industrial Park and the Home Depot, as well as faster upload and download speeds for Puhi customers using BroadbandAccess.
The recent expansion adds to Verizon Wireless’ $17 million dollar investment in Hawai‘i last year. Nationwide the company has invested nearly $45 billion since it was formed n $5.5 billion on average every year n to increase the coverage and capacity of its national wireless network and to add services.
KIUC CEO to talk energy at Developer’s Council
Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative President and Chief Executive Randy Hee will speak at the Kaua‘i Developer’s Council general membership meeting Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort.
Hee will discuss KIUC’s strategic plan, energy rates, the long-term outlook and energy efficiency.
The cost for members is $22, $25 for non-members; the fee includes lunch.
The Kaua‘i Developer’s Council is a nonprofit corporation devoted to promoting ethics and community responsibility in development.

USS Tripoli to be used in missile testing
The decommissioned Navy helicopter carrier USS Tripoli returns to Kaua‘i water this month to participate in high-altitude ballistic intercept missile tests.
The Tripoli will serve as a floating platform that will launch Scud-type missiles as part of the ongoing testing.
The Tripoli was decommissioned in 1995 and had been moored for several months at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in California, according to the Missile Defense Agency.
Chamber events ahead
The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce will host its Business After Hours event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the ResortQuest Kauai Beach at Makaiwa.
The event will feature a jazz performance by Loren Kayfetz and company. The cost to attend is $17 for members, $22 for non-members. The deadline to register is tomorrow.
As part of Military Appreciation Month, the Chamber will host a military appreciation luncheon with Rear Adm. Townsend “Tim” Alexander, commander of the Navy Region Hawai‘i.
Alexander will speak about the Navy’s economic impact on Kaua‘i at 12:30 p.m. May 29 at Duke’s Canoe Club. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and a lunch buffet follows at noon.
The cost to attend is $38 for members, military and military employees, and veterans before May 22, $48 thereafter. The cost for guests is $58.
The deadline to register is May 26.
Finally, the Chamber will host a lunch with Gov. Linda Lingle on June 17 at the Kauai Mariott Resort and Beach Club.
Lingle will provide a legislative update at the event, which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Mokulele breaks ground on new facility
Mokulele Airlines broke ground this week on a $4.2 million fixed based operator and maintenance facility near Honolulu International Airport.
The 14,000-square-foot facility will serve corporate jet customers arriving on O‘ahu either as a final destination or to continue on to Neighbor Islands. Passengers would be able to disembark from their private plane and immediately board a Mokulele Airlines/go!Express plane for travel to a Neighbor Island. Mokulele and go!Express planes will also be serviced at this facility.
“In a time when there is so much doom and gloom in the news about the airline business, we are pleased to report that Mokulele Airlines is growing to meet the travel and cargo demands of Hawai‘i,” CEO Bill Boyer said.
Aloha Beach resort re-opens
Kahanu Bar & Grill
ResortQuest Aloha Beach Hotel in Wailua has re-opened its Kahanu Bar & Grill. The Maile oceanfront pool was renovated and the lunch menu selections enhanced.
Following a soft opening Thursday, free pupu will be offered every Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bar & grill service is offered daily Thursday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a special Happy Hour menu from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
A grand opening is scheduled for May 29
and 30.
