What started out as an igloo turned into a palace.
Penni Taketa, co-director for the ‘Ae Kamalii Preschool, said the idea to create a structure for the students from recycled materials has evolved since it was started in April.
At first, staff gravitated to creating an igloo out of used plastic jugs. But the vision didn’t take. “Nobody here would know what an igloo is,” Taketa said. “So, we thought we’d turn it into a house.”
The youngsters at the Lihu‘e school had other ideas, and the house soon morphed into a palace.
To date, more than 400 plastic containers have been used for the project.
And according to Taketa, the children love playing in it despite the incomplete roof.
“Their favorite game is playing ‘McDonald’s,’ but watch out, the cheeseburgers cost $5,” Taketa said.
