After the dust settled, Kaua‘i emerged with two gold and two silver medals by its teams, including Team Kaua‘i’s U12 fifth straight state title.
Under head coach Todd Mayer, Team Kaua‘i advanced through the tournament by notching wins against Mililani, 7-1, Maui 10-1 and New Hope O‘ahu for the championship, 7-3.
Trevor McCracken finished with six goals and an assist followed by Cyd Sitzler with five goals and an assist.
Matthias Davis added three goals and three assists, Jean-Luc Tremblay and Kawai Peahu both finished with three goals and two assists.
Defense work headed by Corey Nemeth and Cascade Mayer kept the opposition at bay along with the goalkeeping abilities of Daniel Alonzo and Iki Punua, states a Kaua‘i YMCA Inline Hockey League press release.
Team Noname combined Kaua‘i and O‘ahu players in the Under 14 division, opening with a win over O‘ahu, 3-1 and New Hope O‘ahu 4-3 before dropping to Mililani in overtime during the championship game, 3-2.
Thomas Windham sparked that team’s offense with a goal and two assists while McCracken and Ben Steuri added two goals each and Sierra Mayer finishing with a pair of assists.
Team Kaua‘i’s U16 team came out of an overtime battle with the gold after defeating O‘ahu 6-5. This was the second time the TKU16 went up against O‘ahu in the tournament after opening with wins over Maui 6-0 and Mililani 5-3 before dropping to O‘ahu 5-3 in pool play.
Keala Davis paced the TKU16 offense with seven goals and four assists followed by Ikaika Fuerte finishing with three goals and four assists.
Pierce Int-Hout added four goals and two assists with Noa Chun finishing with four goals.
Fuerte and Zeb Leech-Kritchman anchored the defense with Gregory Balmores doing goalkeeping duty with some key saves on goal throughout the weekend, but notably during the championship game.
Teriyaki Posse, Kaua‘i’s U18 squad, opened with wins against Maui, 8-2 and O‘ahu 6-4, but dropped to defending champion Mililani in the title match. Davis again stepped up in offense and finished with a match-high five goals and three assists in Teriyaki Posse’s 5-4 loss. J.R. DeGroote added three goals and three assists followed by Bruce Perdue contributing two goals and two assists.
Perdue also joined Fuerte in anchoring the defensework along with goalkeeper Balmores.
With the results of the Maui tournament under its belt, the Kaua‘i Inline Hockey League will be sending its U12 and U16 teams to the North American Roller Hockey Championship finals in San Jose, Calif., in late July.
