KALAHEO — The Gee basketball split a program as the 3 G’s Nation competitive basketball league resumed play Monday night.
Donovan Harrison finished with a game-high 19 points, including a pair from outside the three-point arc to lead the Gee Unit to a 33-31 edge over Papalina in a Boys 13 Under contest to open the night.
Two-tiered balanced scoring and a tight defense gave Kaulupono Blue a 27-22 edge over the Gee’s Angels in the first of two Girls 13 Under matchups at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
In the finale, Kawehi Louis-Diamond finished with a game-high 26 points as the Kamikaze held back Kaulupono 42-41 in a squeaker.
Kamikaze, nursing injuries in its ranks turned to Louis-Diamond to lead the troops and got her game-high performance followed by Alexis Hernandez stepping up for 7 points. Lauren Hanao added 4 points and a pair from Leslie Lockyer rounded out the win.
Kaulupono White, despite being out-heighted by the Kamikaze, scrapped back with Nicole Banasihan leading the effort with 15 points followed by Kaelyn Kamakele adding 10 points. Casey Anacleto netted 7 points, Lenaiah Banasihan finished with 5 points with Jullynn Ramos and Nicole Palacio adding pairs each.
Harrison led the Gee Unit to an early 11-8 opening quarter, but Papalina answered in the second frame to outshoot the Gee Unit 7-5 behind a pair of buckets from Trey Aguano and a three-point bomb from Tystin Gummerus. That pulled Papalina to within a digit 16-15 at the half.
From there, it was point-for-point between the two squads for the remainder of the game.
Following Harrison’s lead, Makana Aki finished with 5 points, Mikal Maenz had 3 points and Allis Adimay, Lansen Ito and Steven McCabe each finished with a pair for the Gee Unit.
Gummerus led the Papalina effort with 9 points including two from the three-point zone. Vaughn Thompson and Kainoa Simao added 6 points each with Kalawaia Judd and Aguano adding 4 points each. Kelson Andrade finished with 3 points.
Mahea Hanie-Grace, one of the MVPs from the weekend’s tournament, fired 5 points and Kekai Gonsalves lit up the fans with a three-point bomb as the Gee’s Angels outshot Kaulupono Blue 11-2 in the final frame in a comeback effort.
Hanie-Grace finished with 11 points, including a trey, to lead the Angels followed by Gonsalves’ 3 points and Raquelle Matayoshi ending 3-4 on the charity stripe despite strong effort against the Kaulupono defense in the paint.
Sanoe Kaohelauli‘i netted her 6 points in the second period to lead the Kaulupono scoring. She was followed by Cheyanne Duarte, Arrisa Thronas and Taylor Garcia adding 4 points apiece. Shayna Alop added 3 points with Shay Orial, Jennifer Grady and Vakeesha Lagazo lending 2 points apiece.
