Open water swim pre-register deadline tomorrow
The deadline to pre-register for the Second Annual Hanalei Open Water Swim is tomorrow. The event — for keiki and adults — will be on July 26 at the Hanalei Pier.
This year’s swim will be dedicated to the late Laurie Denton, last year’s inaugural women’s winner who later passed away of complications from breast cancer. A portion of the funds raised will go to support an individual or a family who is dealing with breast cancer.
Late registration will be taken at 7 a.m. on the day of the race at the pier. The event starts at 9 a.m.
Application forms are available either on www.namolokama.com or at various surf and bike shops or athletic clubs. For more information, call 826-7585.
College coaches to offer free baseball clinics
Various college baseball coaches will be on the Big Island for the seventh Annual Kalae Iki Youth Baseball Clinic, scheduled for July 18 through 20 at the Kailua-Kona baseball diamond.
This free clinic is open to boys and girls, aged 7 to 17.
Stanford’s Mark Marques, San Jose State’s Sam Piraro, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo’s Joe Estrella and former major leaguers Tim Leary and Billy Hasselmen are slated to be on this year’s staff.
The coaches will also be holding a seminar called “Preparing Your Child for College,” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the final day of the clinic at the Kekuaokalani Gym.
For more information, call Estrella at 974-7700.
4 sessions left for tennis, swim camp
The Club at Hanalei Bay Resort is accepting registration for its Summer Tennis and Swim camp. There are four sessions left, with the next camp running from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., this Monday through Friday.
Call 821-8225 with any questions.
Koloa PW reopens registration
The Koloa Pop Warner organization has reopened registration for kids aged 8 to 14. Applications will be taken from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of July at the Koloa Ball Park.
For information, call 652-2105.
WHS announces retirement/fundraiser
Representatives for Waimea High School announced yesterday the date of the retirement/fundraiser in honor of former vice principal Pat Perreira.
After 32 years of dedication to the school, of being an administrator, teacher and football coach, Perreira retired last month.
The event is scheduled for 5 p.m., Aug. 9, at the high school.
Tickets for the dinner and pupu are $10 and are available by calling 338-999 or 482-1165. Proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the Waimea athletic department and the Richard Doi and Bunji Shimomura scholarships.
